ALBUM REVIEW: Hyperdontia – Harvest Of Malevolence

Turkish / Danish Death Metal masters HYPERDONTIA need no introduction, so let’s get right into their third full length album of brutality. Out now via Me Saco Un Ojo Records, Dark Descent Records and Desiccated Records.

Instantly bludgeoning us with crushing production to deliver devastating riffs and drums alike, the Hyperdontia we know and love are back on top form. From the endless streams of visceral guitars and intricate bass work to the inhuman vocals and business of the drums; there is no denying these guys are some of the strongest musicians in the genre. That said, they never go the pretentiously technical route, keeping it old school with a sepulchral atmosphere and violently intense playing across the board. If that isn’t enough to hook you, the groove-tinged moments surely will. Attacking in so many ways but all of them having the pulverising spirit of Death Metal on full display, the beginning of this record is a bellowing cacophony of rotten magnificence showing a band whose refined and malicious take on the old school will still have you starving for more… And we are only just beginning!

Continuing in their upheaval of all in their path, the sheer enormity of the sound here from the dual guitars allows Malik’s more experimental bass playing to weave between Mathias and Mustafa’s barbaric string slaying. Tuna’s drumming is still some of the best around, as the blasting feels dynamic and powerful in equal measure. Their deathly display is morbid to the core and you can tell that the band work superbly as a unit. From their more grotesque beginnings to their more direct and technical flourishes today, Hyperdontia have consistently been a fantastic band from day one to present. With such a busy discography in only a decade, it is a wonder they still have so much creativity to draw from, but all the same they never disappoint or tread water. This material remains as engaging and exciting as ever.

This is one of those albums that has just the right running time. They get in, give you all of the glorious chaos and violence you could hope for and then cut it before things get dull. I don’t feel a moment was wasted on this record and that each track serves a purpose while the fat has clearly been cut off. It is difficult to flaw such a precise and vicious cut of Death Metal indeed. Naturally one can say there is not much new ground broken, but I don’t care about such things. I care about passionate maniacs playing great extreme music and that is undeniably the case on here. Each track is an impressive offering of decay that falls perfectly into place on the record and drags you further into the deep abysses of Hyperdontia’s massacre. Turn up your record player and blast this ferocious opus into your skull with all of the wattage and force you can withstand and you’ll have one hell of a good time. The sheer brutalism, serpentine atmospheric parts and consistently stampeding instrumental excellence will not disappoint.

A storm of swarming Death Metal malevolence that will grip you from start to end. This seasoned armageddon machine of the underground is an inescapable force and for good reason. Their discography a spotless onslaught of morbid majesty that is entirely worthy of attention and this new gem does not let them down. Hyperdontia remain on top of the game.
