ALBUM REVIEW: Nawaharjan – Lokabrenna

After a single EP back in 2011, German Black Metallers NAWAHARJAN are back with their debut full length record, playing an ancient and mystical blend of Black Metal. Set for release via Amor Fati Productions on February 20th.

Ritualistic and raw blackened hatred fires in without introduction needed, going for a discordant blend of opulent riffs, conjuring a disturbing atmospheric from the onset. Interestingly this album is conceptualised from the tale of Sinmara (the Germanic goddess, not the band) and the breaking of her nine locks, each track representing a chain. Now the trivia is out of the way I shall continue with the review. The demonically ravishing soundscapes or swirling guitar aggression and thick, pounding drums permeating the mix make for a uniquely unhinged backing to the howling insanity provided by the vocalist. A dense sound, filled with rage and concocted spirits from a time long ago. With such a disdain-filled approach to the songwriting there are some refreshingly melodic touches within the guitar riffs that add an ambient melancholy while taking nothing away from the powerful brilliance that the band drives out so ferociously. Despite the obvious Germanic theme, there are quite a few noticeable influences from the early Greek Black Metal sound with that ritualistic feeling ever-present. A flourish of vibrancy and grandiosity is occasionally thrown forth like a spear into the cosmos by their mesmerising ability to create staunch and memorable riffs over some crazily intense drums and with ceaselessly energetic chanting screams. Throughout the record the sound seems to cascade this darkened yet revitalising energy of pure liberation, exploration and reflection (as some song titles may suggest), fiercely delving into a cathartically harsh dissonance that is gorgeously well-rounded and sonically diverse while keeping on a certain path of excellence. The illumination of pure malevolence and depraved, scathing sound is clearly indulged to the bands fullest ability throughout this one hour piece of unwaveringly marvellous art. The occasionally utilised guitar solos further the melodic side of the album showing even more fantastic musical ability, while staying in keep with the ravaging inferno of sounds in the rhythm sections. The destructive fire of this album is all consuming and something one cannot ignore. Monolithic instrumental and vocal walls deliver a devastatingly tense and thick sound that truly does feel like it comes from another place and time. Something unforgettable and malicious has been unleashed with this recording that should definitely be witnessed as it is indeed a spectacle to behold. While luxuriously ambient and with utmost musical prowess, this remains a punishing and visceral listen that definitely is not for the faint of heart. I always commend a band who manages to keep the traditional Black Metal elements at the core of their music while doing something groundbreaking or unique, Nawaharjan definitely achieve this with a blisteringly contempt that is astonishingly well performed with vicious riffs, incredible blastbeats and furious vocals, distinguishing melodies and ravenous dissonance all used in unison to make something truly special. These unbreakable locks have been opened and this album is the vessel for which such a groundbreaking transition shall occur. -9/10
