ALBUM REVIEW: Dead Soul Alliance – Behind The Scenes

Canadian Death Metallers DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE unveil their debut full length album. Set for release via Bitter Loss Records and Dawning Septic Productions on September 3rd.

A simple introduction opens the album with an uneasy feeling before whammy dives, blast beats and nasty riffs launch a ferocious onslaught of pure Death Metal carnage into life with screeching leads to pierce the air. Stoic bass lines soon pick up over a fiery drum performance as the cascades of snarling vocals and malicious riffing take us into overdriven fury. The sound at hand is a tasteful mix of old school Death Metal ranging from American brutality to the grit and groove of Swedish bands with some doom-laden moments for atmospheric texture. Primal and energetic but with a diverse sound, it is easy to appreciate this worship of traditional Death Metal and its passionate execution from the early moments of the record. A merciless beginning to what will hopefully be a monolithic delivery of extremity.

Picking up the pace with a slew of d-beats to inject more Swedeath tendencies into the sound, there is no avoiding the massacre of headbanger-friendly instrumentals which back up some killer snarling vocals to give us a grotesque and exciting sound of pure morbidity. The visceral hooks and meaty sound of the record is definitely a huge step forward from the already enjoyable EP, this being a more balanced and varied affair that still has that mayhem at the core of the deathly sound. Injecting the filthy Death Metal with a lot of ferocity from Thrash Metal’s more extreme moments gives the record moments with a feeling of urgency, upping the ante and dropping some artillery of epic proportions upon the listener. This is not a meek or tame listen at all, that is for sure. Charging in gadarene fashion to the logical conclusion of total devastation, this album is an engaging and fierce example of Canadian Death Metal being able to deliver the same levels of aggression and unforgiving musicianship as ever.

Crushing, obliterating Death Metal with so much fire and fury at the heart of things that is contagious to listen to. Definitely a name that will carve itself a place in the Canadian Death Metal underground, this duo will hopefully continue to deliver such levels of quality on subsequent releases as this album was immensely enjoyable.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
